New York (Somalilandmirror.com)-The UN envoy to Somalia Nicholas Haysom concluded his speech at the UN Security Council without mentioning the decision to expel him by the Somali Government.
Addittionally, In the press conferences after the UN Security Council session, Deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said ,replaying to a question related to Muqdisho’s expulsion of the UN envoy to Somalia, “At this stage, we continue to seek further clarification…..we imagine he will continue to go about his work.”
The UN spokesman added that “he is the special representative of the UN Secertary General, and he was breifing to the security Council in that capacity”.
Somalia’s Ambassador to the UN Abukar Osman, meanwhile said, that his government rejects interference into its own internal affairs, in an indirect criticism to the UN envoy Mr Nicholas Haysom.
Furthermore, Somalia’s foriegn minister said yesterday, that the decision to expel the UN envoy is final and that Muqdisho cannot have him back again.
It is not clear yet, what is the next step by the Somali government, or the UN.
However, getting rid of the UN’s chief envoy when you are a country as dependent on international goodwill as Somalia is an extraordinary act.
Also, to kick out a diplomat as distinguished as Nicholas Haysom makes this decision even more remarkable.
It is worth recognising Haysom’s background, as he was Nelson Mandela’s chief legal adviser.
He is well-known South African international lawyer, with an astonishing track record as a diplomat.
He was Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan (2012–2016); Director for Political, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Affairs in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (2007–2012); Head of the Office of Constitutional Support in the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) (2005–2007).
